Sherb Talk: Working Ranches and Land Conservation
Susan Lohr and Stacy McPhail of the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy will talk about private, landowner-driven efforts to place conservation easements on working ranchlands.
Their program was started by Susan with Bill Trampe and other ranchers in 1995 to be an advocate for landowners, not for conservation groups. In the intervening years Susan and Stacy have assisted more than 60 landowners to conserve nearly 50% of the ranchland in Gunnison County. They are very private and respectful of property rights. They have experience with every reason possible that makes conservation a good business and personal choice for landowners. Susan and Stacy assist landowners through the conservation easement process, from first considering conservation to completing and easement. This presentation will explain what a conservation easement does (and doesn’t) do, how the process works, what the financial and personal benefits are, and how conservation easements might fit into business and estate planning.
